Norma Sutherland Smith Park Columbia, MO

Norma Sutherland Smith Park is a planned 50-acre community park located in Columbia, Missouri. Beginning in 2013, the City of Columbia Park Staff began developing concepts in-house based on the department’s use plan for community parks and needs assessment performed as part of the 2013 Parks, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan.

Gateway Design Studio teamed with Midwest Environmental Consultants to provide landscape architectural design documents for this proposed park space for the City of Columbia, MO. GDS developed Conceptual Design Plans and Phase 1 final plans while coordinating with the City’s park’s staff for the mitigation, development, and maintenance requirements that follow the City of Columbia standards for landscape and land preservation.

As part of the overall plan an extensive trail system was designed; this included both paved and off-road extreme trail conditions for biking and hiking within the park. The trail included key elements such as gazebos at vistas and creek crossings within the riparian corridors. CLICK ON THE IMAGES BELOW FOR DESCRIPTIONS.

RECOMMENDATIONS

GDS recommended preserving the existing glaciated plains as conservation areas within the park. Recommendations also included naturalizing and using native plant materials within the developed park areas such as bio-retention basins, the lake and along the trail system specifying native trees, shrubs, perennials and grasses.
